Esophageal manometry evaluates how well the muscles of the esophagus work and how the valves at the top and bottom open and close. A thin catheter is used to measure pressure while you swallow, helping identify causes of swallowing difficulty, chest pain related to the esophagus, and motility disorders.

When is esophageal manometry used?

Esophageal manometry is used in several situations.

Evaluate the cause of reflux of stomach acid and contents back into the esophagus (gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD). Symptoms of GERD may include heartburn, regurgitation, and chronic cough.
Determine the cause of problems with swallowing food, such as food or liquids getting stuck in the chest after swallowing.
Evaluate patients with chest pain that may be coming from the esophagus rather than the heart.

Preparation is straightforward and focuses on short-term fasting and medication considerations before the test. You’ll follow specific instructions before arrival, complete the study during your visit, and typically resume normal activities afterward. Detailed instructions and timing are provided below.

Step 1.

Day of Your Procedure

Do not eat or drink for 4 hours before your appointment time.
Avoid any narcotics, benzodiazepines, and muscle relaxants as these medications can affect the results. If you have taken any of these medications, your procedure will be rescheduled to a later date.

Step 2.

After Your Procedure

You may typically return to your normal diet, medications, and daily activities immediately, unless your provider gives different instructions.
Some people experience minor side effects like a sore throat or sinus congestion. These should resolve in a day or so. If you experience a nosebleed that does not resolve quickly, contact our office immediately.

Medication:

On the day of the test, avoid narcotic pain medications, benzodiazepines, and muscle relaxants—these can interfere with esophageal contractions and may require rescheduling.
Continue essential medications, including blood-pressure and heart medicines, unless you are instructed otherwise.
If you have diabetes, hold your morning diabetes medications while skipping breakfast, then resume as directed once you eat after the test.
