A PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) tube provides long-term access for nutrition, hydration, or medications when eating by mouth is not possible or safe. The tube is placed or exchanged during a sedated endoscopic procedure, and proper preparation helps support safety and recovery.
Preparation focuses on fasting for sedation, medication planning, and arranging transportation. You’ll avoid eating and drinking for a period of time before the procedure and will need a responsible adult to drive you home afterward. Detailed instructions and timing are provided below.
If your insurance requires a referral or prior authorization, our billing office will make every effort to obtain it before services are rendered. If you choose to proceed without required authorization, insurance may deny coverage. If you are a Medicare patient, you may be asked to sign an Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) acknowledging financial responsibility if insurance does not pay. If you are enrolled in a commercial insurance plan you will be asked to sign a non-covered services form.
