Hemorrhoid banding is an in-office treatment for internal hemorrhoids that cause bleeding or discomfort. A small band is placed to reduce blood flow so the hemorrhoid shrinks.

A small rubber band is placed around the internal hemorrhoid during a quick office visit. The hemorrhoid typically shrinks and falls off within a few days. More than one session may be recommended depending on severity.
Sedation is usually not needed. Temporary pressure or mild discomfort can occur, and your team will tell you what’s normal. Rare complications include heavier bleeding, infection, or significant pain that should be reported.
In most cases, hemorrhoid banding does not require a full bowel prep like a colonoscopy. You may be asked to use an enema or mild laxative before the visit so the area is easier to see, and you’ll receive specific instructions if any preparation is needed.

On the day of the procedure, you’ll check in and review your health history, symptoms, and medications. In the exam room, a small scope (anoscope) is gently placed into the rectum so the internal hemorrhoid can be seen. Your doctor then uses a special device (ligator) to place a tiny rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid. This cuts off its blood supply so it can shrink and fall off over the next several days.
The procedure usually takes only a few minutes. You may feel pressure or a sense of fullness but shouldn’t feel sharp pain. When it’s done, you’ll rest briefly, receive written after-care instructions, and then go home the same day.
After banding, it’s common to feel a dull ache, fullness, or the urge to have a bowel movement for several hours. Over-the-counter pain relievers (as approved by your provider), warm baths, and avoiding straining can help. You can usually resume light normal activities later the same day or the next day, but you should avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for a short period.
The treated hemorrhoid typically shrinks and falls off within about 3–10 days, sometimes with a small amount of bleeding when it detaches. Mild spotting is expected; call the office right away or seek urgent care if you notice heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, chills, or difficulty passing urine or stool, as these can be signs of a complication that needs prompt attention.
