Esophageal manometry measures how well the esophagus muscles and valve are working. It’s often used to evaluate swallowing symptoms and before certain reflux procedures.
A thin catheter is placed through the nose into the esophagus to measure pressure during swallows. You’ll take small sips while the system records muscle coordination. The test typically takes under an hour.
Sedation is usually not used. Temporary gagging, watery eyes, or nasal/throat irritation can happen during placement. Serious complications are rare.
You’ll be asked not to eat or drink for several hours before the test (often after midnight if scheduled in the morning). Certain medicines that affect the esophagus, such as some reflux medicines, muscle relaxants, or pain medicines, may need to be held—your prep sheet will list which ones and for how long. Take other essential medications with small sips of water unless told otherwise.
When you arrive, your nose and throat are numbed with spray or gel. A thin catheter is gently passed through your nose into the stomach. You may feel some pressure, a temporary urge to gag, or watery eyes, but you can breathe normally. Once the catheter is in place, you’ll lie on your back or side and take small sips of water as instructed while the machine records pressures with each swallow.
After the test, the catheter is removed and you can typically go home right away. Mild throat or nasal irritation may occur for a few hours. Most people can eat and return to normal activities the same day. Your provider reviews the results and discusses whether any motility disorder is present and how that affects your treatment plan.
