Preparation for FibroScan is simple. Your stomach and upper abdomen should be relatively empty so the sound waves can reach the liver clearly. In most cases, you’ll be asked not to eat or drink anything (other than small sips of water, if allowed) for about 3 hours before the test.

You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the right upper side of your abdomen. In general, you can take your usual medications with a small sip of water unless your provider gives you different instructions. When you arrive, you’ll check in and review your medical history and medications. A staff member will have you lie on your back with your right arm raised above your head so your right rib cage is easy to reach. Gel is applied to the skin over your liver, and a small handheld probe is placed between your ribs.

The device sends painless sound waves into the liver and measures how quickly they travel. You may feel a light tapping or vibration with each measurement. Several readings are taken over a few minutes to get accurate results. You remain awake the entire time, and the scan itself typically takes only 5–15 minutes.

After the FibroScan, the gel is wiped off and you can get up right away. There is no recovery time—most people go straight back to their usual activities, including work and driving, unless your provider has other plans for the visit.

The scan results are analyzed and combined with your labs, history, and other tests to create a complete picture of your liver health. Your provider will review what the numbers mean (fibrosis and fat scores) and discuss whether any lifestyle changes, medications, or additional testing are recommended.
