IV hydration provides fluids directly into the bloodstream when oral intake isn’t enough. It can help relieve dehydration symptoms and support recovery.
Fluids are delivered through an IV over a set period, often 30–90 minutes. Your care team monitors how you’re feeling and adjusts as needed. Some patients also receive electrolytes depending on the plan.
No sedation is used. Minor IV-site irritation or bruising can occur. Rarely, fluid overload can be a concern in certain heart or kidney conditions, so your team screens for that.
Most IV hydration visits do not require special preparation. Your provider may ask you to avoid large meals right before the visit if you are feeling nauseated and to bring an updated list of medications and allergies. Wear loose sleeves so your arm is easy to access.
At the visit, your vital signs are checked and an IV is started in a vein in your arm or hand. A bag of fluid is connected and allowed to drip in slowly while you sit or recline in a chair. You may feel a cool sensation in your arm as fluids begin to flow. Nurses monitor your comfort and blood pressure during the infusion.
Once the fluid is finished, the IV is removed and a small bandage is applied. Most people can return to normal activities right away, although you may be advised to continue drinking fluids and resting while your underlying illness improves. Call your care team or seek urgent care if you develop new chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling, or worsening symptoms after the infusion.
